The Medical Courier is will work hand-in-hand with our local lab in the Social Services Department to pick up and deliver medical specimens, medical equipment, and other related items to various locations in rural Nevada, Reno, and Carson City. The Medical Courier represents the County Laboratory in a professional manner working with medical providers across Nevada. The position is based in Fallon, and will make regular trips to Pershing County (Lovelock), Mineral County (Hawthorne), and Eureka County... and anywhere else pick ups and deliveries are needed. The vehicle to be operated is a normal car or light duty truck. The person who is in this position must be able to plan the route and find directions using GPS maps and, because there is medical information involved, the person must good at keeping information confidential. And, because this is a safety-sensitive position, the Medical Courier must be able to pass pre-employment and random drug testing (including testing for marijuana and THC).

The county pays 100% of the employee-only health insurance premiums (equivalent to $5.82/hour or $12,115/year). Position Summary: Responsible for loading, transporting, and delivering medical items (including supplies, records, equipment, and blood and urine specimens) via automobile between various locations, including multiple sites in rural Nevada.


Essential Functions

  • Demonstrates regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Loads and unloads medical items in vehicle; properly stores items in the vehicle, in compliance with regulations and procedures, for safe transport of said medical items to their destinations.
  • Obtains signatures upon delivery; maintains accurate records regarding collections and deliveries.
  • Drives vehicle to and from various locations as directed, scheduled, and/or on an unscheduled basis; adjusts schedules as required.
  • Plans ahead and chooses suitable routes to make punctual collections and deliveries as expected.
  • Inspects vehicle to ensure that it is in a clean and in operable condition; completes inspection paperwork/checklist; reports the need for service or repair; ensures that vehicles are scheduled for routine maintenance as required.
  • Washes and cleans the interior of the vehicle; fuels the vehicle.
  • Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the department’s service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.


Qualifications


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and Experience:
High School diploma/GED; AND one (1) year of driver/courier experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Required Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of:

  • Laws, rules, and regulations for operating a motor vehicle in the state of Nevada.
  • Safe handling principles and practices related to medical supplies, specimens, and other related materials.
  • State of Nevada geography, map reading, and use of GPS equipment for finding locations.
  • Standard office practices and procedures, including records management.
  • Communicating effectively in oral and written forms.
  • Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone.
Skill in:
  • Working without close supervision in standard work situations.
  • Maintaining accurate records of work performed.
  • Understanding and following oral and written directions.
  • Driving a vehicle skillfully and safely.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
  • Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or division goals, objectives, and activities.
Required Certificate, Licenses, and Registrations:
Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
  • A valid Nevada Driver’s License for the equipment operated.
  • HIPAA Certification and training as required by the department.
  • CDC-Required training on safe handling of dangerous goods.

Work is subject to performance under exposure to extensive travel, bodily fluids, fumes, gases, noise, and chemicals.
