Position Summary

Under the direction of the Office Manager, the Patient Transportation Driver is responsible for providing safe, reliable, and timely transportation for Family Healthcare of Hagerstown patients to and from medical, dental, and behavioral health appointments. This position helps improve access to healthcare services by assisting patients with transportation needs while maintaining a professional, courteous, and patient-centered approach. The Patient Transportation Driver is also responsible for vehicle safety, maintenance monitoring, scheduling support, and limited administrative assistance as needed. Supports and follows the vision, mission, goals, and objectives of Family Healthcare of Hagerstown.


Responsibilities and Duties

  • Safely transport patients to and from Family Healthcare of Hagerstown appointments in accordance with all Maryland motor vehicle laws and organizational policies.
  • Assist patients with entering and exiting the vehicle as appropriate while ensuring patient dignity, comfort, and safety.
  • Plan and adjust transportation schedules to accommodate patient needs, traffic conditions, weather, and other unforeseen circumstances.
  • Determine safe and efficient travel routes while considering individual patient requirements.
  • Contact patients to confirm transportation arrangements, appointment times, and pick-up schedules.
  • Maintain daily transportation logs, patient transportation reports, mileage records, and other required documentation.
  • Conduct and document pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness and ensure vehicles remain safe and presentable at all times.
  • Monitor vehicle maintenance needs and report necessary repairs, maintenance concerns, and operational issues promptly.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, respect, and courtesy when interacting with patients, families, providers, staff members, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and organizational information.
  • Assist with basic clerical functions, including answering telephones, taking messages, copying, faxing, scanning, and data entry.
  • Provide scheduling support, patient registration assistance, insurance verification support, and other administrative duties as assigned.
  • Assist with training and cross-training of clerical staff and volunteers as directed.
  • Perform job responsibilities in accordance with safety standards and organizational policies.
  • Support quality service delivery and patient satisfaction initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Position Qualifications


Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Additional coursework in business, customer service, healthcare, or transportation-related fields preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of driving experience required.
  • Previous experience providing transportation services, customer service, healthcare support, or community services preferred.
  • Experience with scheduling, administrative support, or patient services preferred.
  • Basic computer skills required, including email, data entry, and use of scheduling software.
  • Knowledge of local roads, highways, and surrounding communities required.

Licensure/Certifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Current and valid driver's license required.
  • Safe driving record required and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred or required within designated timeframe.
  • First Aid certification preferred.

Physical and Mental Effort


Physical:

Moderate physical effort is required. Position involves prolonged periods of driving, sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, and assisting patients with transportation-related needs. Requires the ability to enter and exit vehicles frequently throughout the day and to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull up to 25 pounds. Manual dexterity is required for vehicle operation, documentation, use of communication devices, and basic office equipment. Normal vision and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, are required to safely perform job responsibilities.


Mental:

Frequent periods of concentration, attention to detail, and sound judgment are required while operating vehicles, coordinating schedules, maintaining records, and interacting with patients. Position requires the ability to manage frequent interruptions, adjust schedules as needed, solve problems independently, and respond appropriately to changing circumstances. Strong communication skills, patience, professionalism, and customer service skills are essential.


Sensory:

Must be able to effectively communicate in spoken English and possess the ability to read, write, and comprehend English. Requires visual acuity sufficient to safely operate a motor vehicle, read maps and schedules, complete required documentation, and navigate traffic and road conditions.


Environmental and Working Conditions

Work is performed both inside and outside of Family Healthcare of Hagerstown facilities and primarily within company vehicles while transporting patients throughout the community. Daily interaction with patients, family members, providers, staff members, volunteers, and community partners is required. Frequent use of vehicles, telephones, computers, scheduling systems, and office equipment is expected.


The position requires driving in varying traffic, weather, and road conditions, including rain, snow, heat, and other environmental conditions. Potential exposure to communicable illnesses, infectious diseases, and other healthcare-related hazards may occur while interacting with patients. Employees are required to follow all safety protocols, utilize appropriate protective equipment when necessary, and comply with organizational policies regarding patient transport and confidentiality.
